General studies have demonstrated that an exercise regime is unlikely to result in short term weight loss beyond what is achieved with dietary change. Yes, exercise can improve your cardiovascular fitness. Yes, it releases endorphins (the feel good hormones). Yes, it can tone those wobbly bits.
To lose weight though, eating less and eating right are more important in weight loss than exercise according to Mayo Clinic. What is interesting here is actually how much exercise is needed to offset the “bad” things you eat.
For example, a doughnut has around 250 calories so you’d have to cycle for a whole hour to offset the effect!! That’s assuming you eat only one! The rule then for dietary weight loss is “little and often”.
Six small portions (the size of your fist or palm of your hand) of high quality food throughout the day will serve you better if weight concerns you. Whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds together with lean protein (fish, bean, eggs) and some good fats like avocado and olives can help you see weight loss faster than exercise!! It’s a lifestyle change well worth incorporating.
