“Put your arm down son, you’re losing friends”. That is a quote from an old movie and one I’ve never forgotten for its humor and stark reality. Body odor or B.O. can be offensive and a real turn-off. Hence deodorants have created a popular market for better hygiene.
But wait! What about the chemicals used in commercial deodorants? Are we trading one problem for another?
Aluminum salts account for most of the sweat blocking ability of anti-perspirants. M.D.s are questioning the side-effects of aluminum being absorbed into the skin. When it breaks free, it’s highly charged and may affect DNA which can increase the risk of cancerous cells.
Parabens, which are used as preservatives in most commercial deodorants, can behave like a weak form of estrogen. Over long periods of time (we humans can use deodorants several times a day over a lifetime) accumulation of parabens may be linked to breast cancer risk.
Yet, the FDA states they haven’t seen enough proof to pose a significant health risk. However, women’s groups, focused on safe cosmetics point out 90% of all breast cancer cases are related to environment and lifestyle and the closest environment to the breast is the under arms.
Thankfully, there are healthier options with gentle, safe, and effective ingredients. Here is a list of several.
